Living in the Moment

The Slytherin House Ghost

We’re constantly fixated on an idea — a version of ourselves at some point in the future. All the hustle, the chaos, willingly participating in the futile rat race, it all leads there in the end — The lure of becoming a different, better version of ourselves at some point in the future.

That promotion, that new job, that new investment, that long overdue vacation before getting back on the hamster wheel, things that make us perceive ourselves as more successful or happy or fulfilled, that abstract version of ourselves, it’s always just beyond the horizon.

When we get there, though, it rarely justifies the wait or the investment — both physical and emotional. We soak in the moment for…well, a moment, and then subconsciously start thinking about the next ‘plan’, the ‘next step’ to success.

Where does it end? Does the checklist really exist? Or is it just a construct drilled into us so frequently that we start accepting it as gospel?

Should we just start living in the moment instead, and hope fulfillment stems from there? Well, maybe someone should set the ball rolling.
